Winter Skin Tips

I don't know about you, but this winter has wreaked havoc on my hands! I have eczema, so I typically have dry skin the way it is & have to use lotion regularly. My personal favorite at the moment? Jergens Shea Butter. I slather it on every single time I get out of the bath or shower! Now that helps my body & my ever growing belly, but my hands are another story! Since realizing this, I decided to do some online research & have come across a few tips for winter skin that I would like to share with you.

Make sure you moisturize more.
Sure, you...just like me...have found a moisturizer that works great in the spring and summer months, but did you know that as the weather changes, so should our skin routine? Yeah, I didn't.... The first thing I came across was that you should find an 'ointment' moisturizer that is oil-based, not water based. The oil will create a protective layer on your skin that will retain more moisture than a cream or lotion. If you plan to use on your face, be sure to look for non-clogging oils such as avocado oil, mineral oil, primrose oil, or almond oil. Shea oil (or butter) is controversial because it can clog facial pores.

Bring back the sunscreen.
Weird right? Yeah, I thought so too. Apparently winter sun combined with snow glare can also damage your skin. I guess once you think about it a little, it makes sense. Apply sunscreen to your face & hands (if exposed) about 30 minutes before going outside. Be sure to apply frequently if you plan to spend a long time outside.

Take care of your hands.
The skin on our hands is thinner than most parts of the body & has fewer oil glands, meaning that it's harder to keep our hands moist...especially in cold, dry weather. This is what leads to itchiness & cracking. Be sure to wear your gloves when you head out the door!

Avoid the wet.
Don't wear wear socks or gloves. This can irritate your skin & cause itching, cracking, sores & even flare up your eczema if you have it.

Love your humidifier.
Central heating systems & space heaters blow hot dry air through our homes & work areas. By placing small humidifiers throughout our homes, we can keep more moisture in the air & help prevent our skin from drying out.

Don't forget your feet.
In the winter, our feet need something stronger than those minty foot lotions. Look for a lotion that contains petroleum jelly or glycerin instead. Be sure to use exfoliants to get the dead skin off regularly. This helps any moisturizers you use to sink in quicker & deeper.

Forget the regular peels.
If your facial skin is already dry & uncomfortable, avoid using harsh peels, masks & alcohol-based toners or astringents. All of these can strip important oil from your skin. Find a cleansing milk or mild foaming cleanser, a toner without alcohol & masks that are very hydrating, rather than clay-based (which can actually draw moisture out of your face)....Try to use them a little less often than you normally would.

No more hot baths.
Oh no!!!! This is my favorite enjoyment of the night.... Unfortinatly the intense heat of a hot bath or shower after being out in the cold can actually break down the lipid barriers in the skin, which of course, leads to loss of moisture. You are better off with just regular warm water & not spending as much time in it. A lukewarm bath with oatmeal or baking soda can help relieve skin that is so dry it's become itchy.

Drying Your Face The Right Way

Who knew there was a wrong way to dry your face? Of course we know to pat dry, not rub...right? Rubbing can irritate & make breakouts worse. Well guess what? I found a good use for those T-Shirts the ex left me & thought I'd share this little bit of info with you.

After washing your face with a gentle cleanser & lukewarm water, pat dry with a soft cotton T-Shirt. Who would of thought!?! By doing so, you can get rid of dry areas as well as add to your fresh & beautiful glow.

Baby Update ~ She's almost here!

Arrival time is getting closer & closer! Rosella will be here before we know it! Oh, I'm so excited...

Had a checkup last week. Here's the latest news:
Weight: 149 lbs.
Her Heart Beat: 150s
Already Dilating!!! - At about 3, 3 1/2 Doc said.
She's been head down for about 2 months now!!!

Next checkup: Wednesday Dec. 4th.

What have I done this week to get ready? Well I've started nesting! Her daddy brought some baby clothes on Thanksgiving morning to me, so I went through all of those, washed & organized them into storage totes by sizes. When I say some, I mean about 4 large bags worth of clothes, in all sizes from newborn to 6 months. So I had to revamp some of my previous work.

I've organized my baby stuff & totes like this:
* Bathroom items (Baby Shampoo, Powder, Medication, QTips, etc)
* Receiving blankets & other baby blankets
* Newborn - 3 months clothes
* 3 - 6 month clothes
* 6 - 12 month clothes

As you can tell, I started off small...Then I acquired those extra clothes & I decided instead of just buying more small totes, I went with the 58 Qt. & a 66 Qt. & re-purposed the smaller totes for my purses & book collection.

I figure as she grows out of her clothes, I can either donate the clothing or sell on some of those 'Buy, Sell, Trade' groups on Facebook, then reuse the totes for bigger clothes or other organization, like I did with the smaller ones. I actually got 6 of the black 58 Qt. totes on clearance from Walmart for only $4.50/ea. after Halloween & went & bought the 66 Qt. for only $8 (regular shelf price) yesterday. They are a bit pricey, yes....but I feel that it is totally worth it in the end considering I don't have much space & I can reuse them for years to come.

Last, but certainly not least, I've gotten her own little area of our room put together.

There's really not much space, but I did the best I could for where I am at right now. Soon as I'm able to go back to work, I will be working full hopefully I will be able to quickly save up the rest of what I need in order to get us our own home.

The bassinet I am only borrowing for the time being. Her daddy & I spoke about it Thanksgiving morning when he brought all those clothes & he is thinking about cleaning up one that he has for her, or just purchasing a new one. I told him that whatever he does, it should be easily transportable, that way when he has her on weekends & such, we can just pass the bassinet back & forth with little effort.

I've still got to pack a hospital bag for myself as well as get her some clothes ready & put together. Other than that, I believe I'm as ready as I can be at the moment.

How to Care For Your Flat Iron

I don't know about you, but I am in love with my flat iron. I went & bought me a new one last week & am absolutely in love with it. It's like an extra limb to me! So since I have a new one I started wondering, how do you properly care for a flat iron & hopefully get some more use out of it???

The use of hair products & oil can eventually cause build up on your flat iron. Besides the disgusting look of the buildup, it can also cause uneven heating of the ceramic plates as well as incomplete straightening of our hair. Severe buildup can cause damage to our hair and split ends.

You can regularly clean your flat iron using simply lukewarm water & a SOFT wash cloth. Just follow these steps:

1. Make sure that your flat iron is warm to touch, not hot! Also, unplug it from the wall.

2. Dampen a soft wash cloth with lukewarm water. Do not use very hot or very cold water. Gently rub one plate, then the other, where the grime is. Be careful! Harsh scrubbing on ceramic plates can cause scratching of the plates & will basically ruin the use of your flat iron.

3. Wipe down the plates until there is no more build up on them. Check to make sure you've reached all the way to the bottom and gotten any gunk there too (near the power & settings buttons) You can use a cotton swab if it's too difficult to get your wash cloth down in there.

4. Be sure to wipe off any residue from the sides or edges of the plates as well. Use a fresh surface of the wash cloth as necessary.

5. Let your flat iron dry thoroughly before using it again, or plugging it in for that matter.  As we all know, using it while wet can fry our hair. You can gently wipe off the plates with a dry, soft cloth if you are needing it to dry faster.

Be sure to clean your flat iron regularly for best results.

When To Toss Your Makeup

As you know I am not much of a cosmetics person. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the variety of colors & what you can do to change up your own look, but the hassle of keeping track of what you already have & keeping it organized....who has the time? And another thing, how long to keep what...It sure would be nice if cosmetics had expiration dates just like our groceries? Yes, I believe that would make life so much easier.
I've come up with a list after a lot of researching & finally figured out those invisible expiration dates....Here you are. Be sure to share this with all your girlfriends!
Tip: If you have a hard time keeping track of when you bought your cosmetics, just grab the nearest Sharpie & write down the purchase date on that item! Then you can just refer back to this list & go from there.
Liquid Foundation:
If you use a pump foundation, it will last longer. But if you are dabbing your fingers in it every day, then you may want to get rid of it a little sooner. They say about 6-8 months, however keep in mind that your foundation color is bound to change at least twice a year, so I'd just count on tossing it about every 6 months.
Liquid Concealer:
This amazing stuff can last up to a year, as long as you are using a clean sponge or applicator every time. If you are using your fingers though, it's best to toss it after about 3 months.
Cream Blush:
Cream blush should be replaced after about a year. To keep your cream blush longer, keep your blush brush clean & store in a dark, dry place. If your blush gets wet you run the risk of bacterial growth. Moisture can come from residue from your foundation & face cream as well. To keep this from happening, wait a few minutes after you apply your foundation or face cream to apply your blush.
Face Powder:
Powder face makeup can last over a year, if there is no shiny buildup on the surface & you have no had any skin irritations during use.

Powder Blush/Bronzer:
These fall into a more extended category since most of us change our colors as often as the seasons change. With the proper care & clean brushes, these can last up to 2 years.

Mascara & Liquid Eyeliner:
They say you should throw away mascara & liquid eyeliner every 3 months, however I'm one of those that will use it until it starts getting dry or I just get tired of dealing with the fact that I don't like it anymore. The only exception is if you get an eye infection, then you should throw it away immediately.

Eye Shadow:
Powdered eye shadow can usually last up to 2 years, as long as you wash your brushes regularly & don't reuse them after an eye infection. However, some will toss their eye shadow after just 4-6 months. Even though they are similar to other powders, since they are constantly used on the eye, they can pick up bacteria and bring it back to the eye very easily.

Pencil Eyeliner:
Pencil eyeliner can last up to 2 years, if properly stored & sharpened regularly. If you sharpen your pencils before each use, it will help keep them clean, which will allow you to use them longer.

Lipstick/Lip Gloss/Lip Liner:
These can all last up to 2 years. Since they don't contain any water, the risk of them growing bacteria is low. But since they are constantly exposed to the mouth area, replacing them after a year wouldn't be a bad idea, or if you've recently been sick.

Nail Polish:
Nail polish won't go bad from bacteria, however it wil become thick & clumpy & the pigments will settle at the bottom of the bottle. If you shake it & it remains at the bottom, it's time to toss it.
* While you're at it, toss anything you haven't used in the last year.

Makeup Brushes:
If cleaned & stored properly, good brushes can last for years, but when the bristles start to fray & fall out, it's time to replace them.

Get your own Samsung Chromebook!

I usually don't post about items that are kind of pricey, however I LOVE my Samsung Chromebook & just thought I would share it with you.

I actually didn't purchase mine, it was gifted to me by a good friend of mine who noticed I was in a rough spot financially, yet needing a laptop. My entire plan was to put one on layaway at Walmart & just make payments & that was going to be my Christmas present to myself. Well, he agreed with me that that plan was a little much (considering $60 a week & I only make about $120-$130 week) Not to mention I am only 5 weeks away from giving birth & still have lots to purchase to get ready for her to arrive.

So anyway, being as I blog & am also wanting to get back into school as soon as possible, he hooked me up with this Samsung Chromebook ....& I must say, I love it! It was a little different getting used to a new operating system, however Google did make it slightly idiot proof & user friendly. Plus you can search about any question you have & all the answers are right there.
You can purchase your very own on Amazon for $244.46 & have the option to add a 2 year Computer Accident Protection Plan for $59.98

Be sure to check back as I will be posting more and more about this fancy little laptop.

How to get cash for coupons at Walmart

We've all heard about it. Someone going to Walmart and being paid to take items out of the do they do it? Well today is your lucky day, I’m going to let you in on this secret! Are you ready for this?!?!

If you’re a regular couponer, you've heard of ‘coupon overage’. If you’re not & have no idea what I am talking about, let me explain. Coupon overage is when a coupon is released & the value of the coupon is actually higher than the shelf price of an item…. Here is an example.

Say a tube of toothpaste is $1.97 & there is a coupon that comes out for $2 off 1. Bam, just like that, you've made 3 cents cash back!

See how easy that was! Now you’re probably thinking, ‘Oh wow, 3 cents. What am I going to do with that?’. Well no, it’s not a huge amount or anything….but think, someone just paid YOU to take it out of the store. And did you know that Walmart is the only store in the United States that offers cash back for coupons? True story!

Only 7 Weeks To Go!

Quick Update...

I've finally hit 33 weeks! & let me tell you, it has not been fun the last 2.
I found myself in the emergency room Monday night due to not feeling that great. I was having pressure & pain & was just really uncomfortable & weak. I didn't want to push my luck with work, being that I work 10pm - 2am & stand the whole time, so I decided to go into the hospital about 7:30pm.

When I got in they took my vitals of course & my heart rate was 120! I couldn't believe it. They ended up checking my cervix, which is still closed (thank God), & did a UA on me. When they tested that they found that I was dehydrated, something was going on with my kidneys & I have an infection! So they decided to hook me up to an IV & give me a bag of fluid to get me re-hydrated. Well when they tried to poke me the first time, they blew the vein in my hand! This is not a very good photo, but here's what it looked like last night (Friday - 4 days after).

They finally ended up giving me my IV & fluids in my arm & then gave me an antibiotic pill & a prescription. Once I was done with the fluids they finally released me, about 10pm, with a note to excuse me from work Monday night. When the discharged me, my heart rate was back down to 80.

When I woke up Tuesday morning, my boss called me to check on me & told me to go ahead & take off work that night, so I didn't get to go back to work until me only 3 days on this weeks paycheck. At part time, minimum wage & only 3 weeks left before my boss really starts questioning if I should still be working, that's not nearly enough.

I had my OB checkup on Wednesday & come to find out with all the pressure & pain I've been having, they think I'm showing signs of early labor! EEEK!!! So I was told to take it easy, don't be walking as much as I have been & make sure I'm resting as much as possible. They also gave me a second antibiotic & told me that I can keep working, as long as I am comfortable.

Well when I went into work on Thursday, I did great until about 12:30am & started in with so much pain. I worked through it & finally got off at 2am, but had one heck of a time walking the 5 blocks home. Usually when I get off work it takes me a few hours to calm down & fall asleep, not Thursday. I was out like a light before 3am!

Last night however, work was great. I got off at 1:30am & felt wonderful & full of life when I got home. Laid awake in bed until about 4:30am & slept till 9:30am when I got up to go back to work & pick up my paycheck... I would love to lay down & crash back out, yet I'm up with a cup of coffee from the coffee shop & writing this post. Haha. No big deal though, luckily I have NO PLANS for the day & can lay down whenever.

Review: L.A. Colors Jumbo Eye Pencil

The other day while I was at Dollar General I got curious & decided that I wanted to add a little to my cosmetic collection, which let me tell very SMALL! While I was searching around, I came across L.A. Colors Jumbo Eye Pencil's for only $1.50. There were a few to choose from & lately I've been wanting white, mostly as a primer for my silver shadow, & found this one is Sea Shells.

I'm not going to lie...when I finally opened it up & lined my upper lid, I was in shock at how much color there was to just 1 swipe. I immediately fell in love with how creamy the product is. The color just pops! In the photo below, the top line is literally just 1 swipe, the thicker is where I layered it about about 3 times.

There are some pro's & con's, as to every product....
Con's: Problems with creasing.
Pro's: Cheaper than NYX Jumbo Pencils. Extremely Creamy. Applies Easily. Blends Nicely. Great As A Base.

If you like a thick liner, than using this product as a liner would be great, however I would recommend using as a base. I've noticed that throwing some eye shadow over it, really makes the shadow pop! As well as stay in place better.

I will definitely be purchasing more L.A. Colors Big Eye Pencils, as well as other products to try & review.

Pregnancy Update: 30 Weeks!

I can't believe that I only have 9 weeks left until my due date! Wow has time flown by!!!

Updates since my last post:
* I have found a job! I am working 4 hour shifts, overnight at a bakery.
* I am beginning to build up my savings, however it is very hard working only up to 20 hours a week at minimum wage.
* I've had my sonogram - GIRL!!!
* Her beautiful name will be Rosella Ruth <3

The Missing Parent

I have certainly had a heck of a about an emotional roller coaster. Between what happen last week with my oldest son, then the phone call I got last night... I just didn't know how I was going to make it through today, let alone keep my head up & continue to push forward through this never ending battle I'm in.

Last night I got a call that baby daddy, of this little guy I'm waiting for to arrive, has turned himself in & will be on his way to prison for a while...A long while. From what I understand at least 4 years, if not longer. That was a hard pill to swallow. I've known this was coming, which is why we have been split up. However what I didn't know was the emotions that would hit when I got off the phone. I've got so many questions...

* How am I going to keep his/her daddy's image & spirit alive?
* How am I going to make sure he/she knows who he is when he gets out & come to meet his child for the first time?
* How do I handle a new relationship?
* What if I get into something serious & end up married by that time? How will he handle it?
* Will he want to try & be a family when he comes & finds us?
* How do I make sure that while he's away, he don't miss ANYTHING?

So many questions.... But I think I've come up with a way & am adjusting, slowly, to all of it.

How do you deal with a parent missing from the home due to similar reasons? Any tips would be very helpful!

I ended up crying nearly all night. The emotions were overwhelming & I'm sure the hormones weren't helping at all. I mean, this is the father of the child I am carrying. His first child. Knowing what kind of man he truly is, knowing what kind of father he was to my daughter... Knowing what kind of heart this man has... Just amazing. I am so proud to have such a man to father this child, even if it will be years before he gets the chance.

I ended up going for a 3 mile walk this morning....3 miles, I know! But by doing so I got myself out of the house & was able to release a little stress. I am considering going on those walks more often & hopefully this will keep me on a better path mentally, & of course physically as well.

I am also taking on the 30 day squat challenge again, starting Sunday...This time I am actually going to finish it!

Recipe Corner ~ Homemade Tortillas

For the first time last week, I made Shredded Chicken Tostato's.
I was terrified. I'd never even eaten them, so I had no idea what I was doing!
Of course though, with my love for food & being in the kitchen I had to go all out. Plus I was cooking for someone 'special' & had to show off my mad skills a little bit.
To put the cherry on top, I decided I was going to make the tortillas myself, rather than just buying a package & cheating. (However, while I was at the store buying everything, I did buy a package just in case I screwed up making them myself. Haha)

Homemade Tortillas
3 Cups Flour
1/3 Tsp Salt
1/3 Tsp Baking Powder
1/3 Cup Veggie Oil
1 Cup Warm Water

I combined all ingredients in a medium sized bowl & began mixing together with my hands. Once I had a good dough going & most of the flour mixed in, I would rip off 1"-2" balls & used a glass in place of a rolling pin to make flat. I then placed in a warm skillet & would let sit until they had a few light brown spots, then flip. Each one prolly took about 3-4 minutes.

I just could not believe how easy it was. I had spoke to a few of my girlfriends, one of which has cooked homemade meals for a long time, & even she said that she wouldn't attempt making her own tortillas! I was so worried when I started mixing the dough...but everything turned out just fine...

In fact, that someone special made the comment he'd even use them to make his breakfast & was eating them by themselves before the chicken even came out of the oven!!!

Child Custody Is Never A Fair Fight

Have you ever been through a child custody battle? I currently have my hands full & am just ready to blow!!! I am dealing with a case regarding my oldest son where his father has totally violated every bit of the 'agreed parenting plan'.

You see, right now he currently has residential custody, which I am hoping to change rather soon. For a while now, I have been denied everything, even a working contact number! Of course, there is a parenting plan in place, so today I got fed up & went to his last known residence to find out that he wasn't there & that they (his family) would not give me a contact phone number! Can you believe that? But to make it just a little sweeter, I had an officer with me & they lied & changed their story to me, right in front of the officer!

Now I am going to get a few more free consultations & see if there is a lawyer that I can afford to hire & I am taking this to court! Especially now that I have done everything in my power to see my son & they have lied to me & denied me my parenting time right in front of an officer!

If you have any advice for me, I'd sure be happy to hear it. Please comment on this post.

I will not give up!

Book Corner ~ What Are You Reading?

I am reading Happy, Happy, Happy: My Life & Legacy as the Duck Commander by Phil Robertson.

In his book, he gives plenty of advice for living a happy life. So far I've made it to chapter 5 & have read about how he grew up, the way things were back in the day, his football era & I'm just getting into when he met Kay & they became official.

So far I absolutely love the book. In fact, I should go open it up & read a little bit more, however I'm totally sidetracked on the blog, which Phil I'm sure would say just makes life complicated, with these computers & such, ya know. Haha.

What Takes Your Breath Away?

I never really get asked this question very often, but then most, it's pretty obvious. I can be outside with my friends & be in the middle of a conversation & just like 'squirrel', I'll stop & stare as I hear a Cummins coming down the road. Then once it passes, my attention is still stolen if I find it's lifted & ready for a good time off road.

Now my man on the other hand, is a Chevy fan (seems his family is too) fact, he's currently driving a GMC. I give him grief all the time, but what die hard Dodge fan wouldn't? We continue to have these 'negotiation' wars, which just make me giggle. I'll pick out a Chevy & he'll pick out a Dodge, either yes or no & then on to the next 'negotiation'. The few things we do agree on is that it's a diesel & big enough for all our children! ..... & NO FORDS!!!
